What Should I Look For While Buying Headphones For Gaming and Music?

What Features To Look In Audiophile Headphones For Gaming
What Features To Look In Audiophile Headphones For Gaming

Once you have a clear idea about these key features, your task of getting your ideal non-gaming device becomes easier.

And you will also better evaluate our 7 amazing choices as well.

Without further delay, let’s start with feature #1:

#1: Sound Quality Matters

Sound Quality
Yeah!

Ask any competitive gamer, and they will reply that compromising on sound means your game is doomed.

Games like Rainbow Six Siege require accurate sound and clear identification of objects to pinpoint and shoot down your opponents.

Again, for critical listening and mixing tracks, the optimum balance between bass, treble, and mids is crucial.

Choose headphones that offer a wider frequency range so that you can pay attention to every sound being played in your game or beat for the best performance.

And you know what?

The bass and treble of non-gaming headphones are much better than those of gaming.

So you are in the right place to get a better in-game sound at a budget price!

(More on that later)

With this, let’s head over to feature #2:

#2: Comfort Is King!

Comfort In Using Headphones
Comfort In Using Headphones

This feature is super-important no matter what headphones you are looking for.

But this feature differentiates between a good and a bad choice for gaming and professional use.

I mean, just imagine you are an avid gamer and love to play for over 6 hours at a time. And in the middle of the game, you find:

Your padding is stiff. Your ears are sweating like anything, and you can’t move your head because of your inflexible headband.

Your gameplay gets ruined from head to toe.

The same with long hours of music listening or reproducing audio tracks.

Ok, then, what’s the solution?

Choose headphones whose ear cups and headbands are well-padded and breathable. Large ear cups are better.

Also, ensure that your headphones fit well with your head size.

#3: Where Is My Microphone?

Headphone Mic
Headphone Mic

Well, Spotify users don’t need to ask this question, but for a gaming freak:

This is a matter of your team’s win or lose.

Your microphone is the only way you can communicate with the team, so you would like to be heard clearly despite all the sounds in the game.

Here is the deal:

If you are planning to play FPS games, go for headphones that offer a mic with brilliant passive noise cancellation.

But for Arcade games, microphones are not that essential, and you should look for other features that will come in handy.

#4: Durability For Long Life!

Durability In Headphones
It’s important!

This is pretty obvious and quite common, regardless of the type of headphones you buy.

You are investing your hard-earned money in a device, so you should expect it to last for years.

And also to absorb accidental falls.

Choose headphones whose body is built from an aluminum frame with a carbon-fiber body so that they can deliver you the solid performance that you expect.

If it’s made of plastic, ensure it’s of good quality.

#5: No Noise, Please!

Carefully Listening To Headphones
Carefully Listening To Headphones

I have already mentioned this in #1.

Modern games are becoming all the more complex and engaging. So close attention to in-game sounds is essential.

The same goes for mixing beats or reproducing vocals.

Hence, ensure your headphones offer good noise cancellation so that no background noise can spoil your experience.

And you will be fine, shooting down all your enemies 🙂

So, here are all the key features you need to look for.

Now, let’s look into detailed reviews of our expert budget picks.

Here we begin:

What Are The Best Regular Headphones For Gaming In 2023?

Regular-Headphones-For-Gaming
Regular-Headphones-For-Gaming

Sennheiser Pro Audio HD280PRO: #1 Non-Gaming Headphone For Gaming

Sennheiser Pro Audio HD280PRO
Dev Thakkar/ Swing Vertigo

I have some very bad news for you.

It is finally time to replace your beloved Sennheiser Pro with a brand-new pair of Sennheiser Pro Audio HD280PRO headphones.

These are so good, and if you’re a home studio or mobile studio creator, a good set of monitor headphones is absolutely essential for your setup.

Accurate And Powerful Performance

These Sennheiser headphones are a great all-rounder. You can just get the job done when it comes to recording or mastering games.

I have been using and recommending these for nearly a few years.

Let’s jump into its design:

They have a foldable design that makes them compact, so throwing them in your kit bag will go well.

Coming to its comfort:

They have rotatable ear cups, some of the softest foam you’ll ever have. So no irritation or discomfort, even during long hours of use.

Now, sound quality and performance are important with studio monitors, but the one thing I love the most about these are:

The oval-shaped ear cups go right around my big melons, making them comfortable for long-wearing sessions.

I love the curly cord, which apparently looks like a pretty short cord that’s quite a lifesaver.

That saved me many times from it being pulled out of various gear.

Coming to the durability aspect:

The plastic construction isn’t flimsy, rather they are solid.

Now, the all-important sound quality and frequency response:

These closed-back headphones have a frequency response of about 8-25000 hertz, and they are 64 ohms, which means they will work with most of your gear.

As I just mentioned, these are closed-back headphones, meaning no sound escapes from the back.

This is important if you want to isolate your audio or if you are tracking your vocals or other sounds.

But again, they are higher-ohm headphones. So they may need a pretty strong amplifier to run.

Finally, its microphone performance:

You get a great noise-canceling mic that doesn’t pick up any sound that comes out because a seal around your ear cups isolates all the audio.

However, these factors may annoy you:

The fit and padding of these Sennheiser headphones can be too tight for large head sizes.

And basically, these headphones act as a toolbox for studio pros and music engineers for mixing tracks or reproducing beats. So they are not specially made for personal music listening.

However, hip-hop, modern pop, and rock tracks sound excellent on HD280Pro.

Pros

  • Clean and accurate sound performance across the entire frequency range.
  • Durable design for long product life.
  • Excellent passive noise-cancellation
  • Secure fit and comfortable for long hours of usage.

Cons

  • The cord is not detachable
  • More apt for professional use than personal music listening.

Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro (80 ohms): Best Studio Headphones For Gaming

Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO 250 (1) (1)
Dev Thakkar/ Swing Vertigo

Personally, I feel that those headphones are good when they can make you cry.

I’m not exaggerating, but I was listening to the interstellar mountain trek soundtrack theme song, and there is a piece in the song that is like the horns in the organ.

The clarity I felt with these headphones is just phenomenal.

Great Sounding Closed-Back Headphones

With a better bass with a well-balanced audio reproduction, they offer just the performance you need for both casual and critical listeners. They can well serve your wired gaming needs as well.

Here are some of its performance specs as I was talking about:

The only thing that creates a great difference between these Beyerdynamic headphones and others is the impedance.

The higher the impedance, the better the sound quality. And DDT 770 Pro has 80 ohms, making it great for neutral listening.

It is the amount of electric pressure going through the system.

The other thing I noticed about them is that they shave clear high-end with high frequencies sound.

So natural and clean.

Next, I heard someone say this has a pretty good bass response, too; it sounds like it through the lows, mids, and highs.

They call it a robust sound stage.

It said that these are closed, so there is strong noise isolation.

Since they are completely over the skull, holding your ears tightly feels like they have a good connection.

Comfort at its best.

You can live stream with this or play games, see how it sounds, and go for it eventually.

However, these factors may annoy you:

They suffer from poor leakage and added to their bulky design, it’s fully unfit to be used outdoors.

Again, they clamp on your head a bit which may affect its comfort during long sessions.

(But this varies from person to person)

So, if you plan to do some serious gaming or music listening indoors, these headphones are your go-to choice, like most other studio pros.

Pros

  • Sturdy and durable in design with dense ear cups to withstand a few accidental falls.
  • Balanced sound profile with great audio reproduction for critical listening.
  • Well-padded and comfortable for long use (That’s why the studio pros love it!)
  • Earpads are replaceable

Cons

  • Poor leakage performance
  • Bit too pricey

SENNHEISER HD 599 SE: Best Audiophile Headset For Gaming

SENNHEISER HD 599 SE
Dev Thakkar/ Swing Vertigo

It’s been a while since I bought any open-back headphones.

But I will definitely say that these Sennheiser headphones have a design that allows air to pass through their cups to the speaker element.

This means that there is less pressure on your ears and a wider sound stage when you listen to music that does come with a couple of trade-offs.

Your #1 Choice For Critical Listening and Gaming

Thanks to its better bass and spacious sound stage, you can record vocals and remix tracks and engage in deep listening through these super-comfortable headphones. Gamers prefer HD 599 SE for better playtime.

Come to its performance aspects:

The high end is very clear and present. The bass is very impressive.

They have an all-plastic construction, but that doesn’t make them feel cheap.

Talking about their sound system, they are incredible.

They are incredibly open and dynamic, and they have made me enjoy listening to music more.

When it comes to comfort:

The earpads are very comfortable, and so far, I haven’t found any pressure points, which is appreciable.

Remember, I mentioned its trade-offs (disadvantages)?

One of those is the lack of isolation.

Plus, they are unstable on your head and are too bulky in design.

Don’t expect to use these in offices or whilst commuting.

Listening to music through these headphones in a room populated with people is basically impossible.

As I already said, its bass sounds good with vocals and instruments, so you better use it for indoor listening or gaming.

Pros

  • Amazingly comfortable for long listening sessions with large and well-padded oval ear cups.
  • Great audio reproduction for detailed listening in games or music tracks.
  • Nice wired connectivity

Cons

  • Poor leakage performance, largely due to design.
  • Microphone not included.

What Are The Best Budget Non Gaming Headset To Buy In 2023?

Best Budget Regular Headphones
Best Budget Regular Headphones

You may know this already. All our choices come fairly within your budget range.

This is because I believe you can get quality gear even at a low price with the right research.

But these choices are unbelievably cheap and still offer great value:

Samson Technologies SR850: Incredible Sound Under $50

Samson SR850
Dev Thakkar/ Swing Vertigo

You get an amazing sound quality that can easily beat a $100 headphone with a neutral output and a ton of bass. It’s not surely winning any beauty contest, but are looks all that we look for in a headphone?

If I elaborate more on the sound quality, then:

It’s exciting and more detailed. So, no matter if you want to play games or listen to music, this can well serve your purpose at a dirt-cheap price.

Sounds Too Good To Be in That Budget

If you are on a tight budget and want exciting sound for music and games, then this headphone is for you. It’s made of high-quality plastic and can offer better comfort to non-glass users.

You will not believe this Samson headphone uses AKG drivers found in more expensive headphones.

The sound signature is pretty balanced, and its bass has good punch and control, which works well for most genres.

Again, the imaging is accurate for accurately identifying objects in the game.

Coming to its comfort aspect:

You get velour ear pads that are not very large in size, and you may have to get some aftermarket pads like those of AKG Kxxx pads to get a better experience.

The material feels stiff and cheap to touch, with little padding.

Again these headphones are not very breathable, so you may have to wipe off your ear sweat after every 60 minutes.

If you don’t wear glasses, the results may slightly improve.

They have pretty poor noise isolation, but at least they don’t leak as much as the full open-back ones.

You should look for closed-back headphones in this list to block all environmental sounds around you.

As mentioned earlier, its body is made up of good quality plastic which makes it lightweight and doesn’t deteriorate, provided that you use it carefully.

Its cable is longer than usual, and you get a 3.5 mm to 6.3 mm adapter with a gold-plated connection.

As for disadvantages:

As said earlier, they suffer from poor isolation, so you cannot use them for outdoor or office use.

They don’t fit very nicely, and you may incur extra costs to get comfortable ear pads.

The headphone body cannot handle rough handling or occasional drops, so better use them cautiously.

So there seems to be a fair say of ups and downs for this pair of reference headphones:

Pros

  • Exciting sound quality with a pretty balanced sound signature.
  • Lightweight design
  • Long usage life due to good quality material build.
  • The bonus of a 6.3mm adapter included

Cons

  • Poor noise isolation
  • Comfort and fit are below average

Philips Audio Philips SHP9500: Great For Critical Listening

Philips Audio SHP9500
Dev Thakkar/ Swing Vertigo

So, when you start researching headphones every once in a while, these little gems pop up.

People whisper about them, they get traction and hype, and then they become almost legendary in the form of headphones that, for whatever reason, punch way above their price point.

One of these is the SHP 9500 from Philips. We are going to take a look at these today and see if they still wow for their price tag:

A Comfortable Listening Experience

SHP 9500 is built for a detailed and critical personal listening experience. A spacious sound stage allows you to listen to instruments and in-game audio easily, and large ear cups give you supreme comfort even during long sessions.

First up, let’s talk about its build and design:

These are built nicely enough, and, especially where it matters, it will be a very lightweight pair that is mostly composed of plastic.

The 50 mm drivers will be pretty visible since this is an open-back pair of headphones, obviously.

The headband will be made of metal, so it is pretty strong. These are user-friendly for a long period of time.

Next, we come to comfort:

Instead of the usual leather padding that you get for the ear cuffs. There is a sort of cloth work over them which absorbs the sweat after wearing them for over an hour or so.

So, unlike the previous choice, ear sweat has no problem here.

Everything about this pair screams comfort, and it is very well designed for long-term usage.

But the most important factor is always the sound quality:

I listen to different genres of music, but a lot of them are just different variations of metal. These all showed a clear preference towards the highs and maybe the mids, neglecting the lows.

When it comes to gaming, these two offer a pretty good appearance. If you want gaming headphones, I honestly have no complaints here.

There is enough separation here that I can clearly hear things like footsteps or any kind of background music or anything like that.

It is a pretty immersive pair in this regard, so I can easily recommend these for gamers.

As for disadvantages:

However, I would not recommend this pair for podcasting and simple video editing.

Because of the emphasis on the highs, you won’t get a super accurate listen of your voice.

These hardly fold at all, so basically, they are not portable.

They will not fit in your bag comfortably nor have a separate cover pouch.

This might be the only thing I could prefer to change in their next model.

Pros

  • Well-padding on the headband and ear cups and its large ear cups make it comfortable for long hours of usage.
  • Good audio reproduction and balanced mids and highs for an immersive experience.
  • Durably built for a long headphone life.

Cons

  • Poor leakage performance, mainly due to its open-back design.
  • Not portable

Sony MDR-ZX110: Budget Over-Ear Headphone With ANC

Sony MDR-ZX110 (1)
Dev Thakkar/ Swing Vertigo

These headphones are highly preferable for DJ gigs.

While the construction is predominantly of plastic, some metal parts in the hinge allow the headphones to fold for easier transportation.

Enjoyable Performance At A Stupidly Low Price!

You get a strong bass, active noise-canceling, and durable cables for an amazing wired gaming and music listening experience at a price lower than most other earbuds.

Continuing its build and design specs:

Beyond that, the headband is adjustable with an audible click, and there is some movement in the angle of the ear cups, so it fits a bit more comfortably.

The cables are the same as the MDR XB250 version, which has some serrated texture. The main cable has some heft to it that I certainly appreciate.

The connector is a 90-degree plug with a slimmer flange, allowing it to be connected through various phone cases.

Now, let’s discuss its comfort aspect:

The headphone is on-ear, meaning the foam padding sits on the ear rather than around it.

The material itself is synthetic and similar. However, it doesn’t have as much foam inside.

But it’s not a big issue since it’s fairly lightweight, and it doesn’t need much clamping force to stay on, it kind of balances.

So the overall headphone construction is pretty reasonable for the price tag of…

(Check out the price yourself. You will surely get surprised!)

As far as its sound quality, here is what I found:

The treble is nice, and the separation is audible too.

However, its bass system is not appreciable or worthwhile.

You could add on some extra dollars and get other headphones with slightly high bass for a better experience.

But their sound performance can be forgivable considering its stupidly low price tag.

The headphone build is flimsy and unstable on your head, making it unfit for outdoor use.

You get very poor noise isolation, so you better not use it for office use as well.

Again the headband lacks padding, and its ear-cups are slightly stiff and don’t swivel, making it less comfortable for long sessions.

These are not perhaps the best headphones, but I certainly feel that they would be a good investment at this price.

Pros

  • Offers decent audio reproduction for nice output in games or music.
  • Good leakage performance
  • Fairly breathable on ears. So no ear sweat, even during extended gaming sessions.
  • Extremely affordable

Cons

  • Unstable fit
  • Poor build quality

Cyber Acoustics AC-5002A: Best Normal Headphone For PC Gaming

Cyber Acoustics AC-5002A
Dev Thakkar/ Swing Vertigo

These headphones are originally totally based on work purposes.

But later on, they are combined with work and play. It is a lesser-known brand that has contributed to the development of headphones.

Great Noise-Cancelling For Meetings and Games

This PC Headset is ideal for online meetings and classes thanks to its great noise-canceling microphone. You can also listen to audiobooks and play your favorite games with ease. They are quite cheaper than others and highly affordable.

As it has been stated, they do an amazing job of unidirectional noise cancellation.

It implies that the mic grabs only that sound that comes from your mouth.

This might be a plus point for gamers, as they must constantly communicate with their teammates.

They are also great for performing any live streaming or recording gameplay videos.

Seems like they are wholly designed keeping in mind a gamer’s point of view.

As regards its comfort:

Highly comfortable headbands with thin outskirts. So, apparently, they are go-to-go headphones for gamers.

As for disadvantages:

They are tight even on small heads, and there is no way to adjust for your head size.

Again, the headset size is very small, which might worry you during long sessions.

The size of the microphone is small too.

Finally, let’s head over to its pros and cons:

Pros

  • Stunning microphone clarity for team games and online meetings.
  • Great noise-cancellation that blocks all ambient noise, even on a moving vehicle
  • Tangle-free cord made of a proprietary material, that is, nylon
  • Very affordable

Cons

  • Small Headset and Mic Size
